Obtaining a Visa in Romania
Obtaining a Romanian visa may be necessary for some business activities in Romania, such as doing ridesharing, food delivery, or freelancing jobs that require a physical presence.
While we primarily specialize in business registration, many of our entrepreneurs are foreigners interested in relocating to Romania. So, in this article, we will discuss what it means to obtain a visa, as well as the requirements to legally obtain a visa and a residence permit in Romania and, by extension, the EU.
What is a Romanian visa?
A Romanian visa is the right to visit Romania for various reasons and stay in Romania for a period of time.
Depending on the type of visa, the processing time varies, but in general, obtaining a visa is the first step towards relocating to Romania or establishing a business here.
What types of visas are there?
- Airport Transit Visa (A):
- Purpose: Stay in the international area of an airport until boarding for the destination country.
- No access to Romanian territory beyond the airport.
- Transit Visa (B):
- Purpose: Transit through Romania.
- Maximum Duration: 5 days.
- Short-Stay Visa (C):
- Official mission, tourism, business, private visit, transport, sports, cultural, scientific, or academic events.
- Maximum Duration: 90 days within a 6-month period.
- No extension of stay rights.
- Long-Stay Visa (D):
- Purpose: Economic, professional, commercial, religious, humanitarian activities, work, study, family reunification, research.
- Maximum Duration: 90 days.
- Extension possible: You must apply at the Romanian Office for Immigration at least 30 days before your visa expires.
- Overstaying leads to visa cancellation and mandatory departure from Romania.
Do I need a visa in the first place?

- Annex 1: The list of countries whose nationals must be in possession of visas when traveling to Romania (the list herein is established in accordance with the provisions of Regulation EU 2018/1806)
- Annex 2: The list of countries whose nationals are exempt from the Romanian visa requirement (this list is established in accordance with the provisions of Regulation EU 1806/2018)
- Annex 3: List of third states whose nationals, holders of diplomatic, service/official and special passports are exempt from the visa requirement in order to enter Romania

Getting and needing a visa depends on you answering yes to the following questions, and as such, it's a good way to see if you are entitled to get a romanian visa in the first place.
- Is the purpose of getting your visa in this list?
- To start a business venture.
- To be employed in Romania
- To visit Romania temporarily, for business.
- Do I have at least 6000 EUR in my bank account as proof of funds? (Mandatory)
- Do I know an internationally spoken language (e.g. English)?
If the answer is yes to all of these 3 questions, then you most probably qualify for a visa, and can apply for one.
